Hot new single ‘I Call Her Semi’ is set to light up airwaves
just like ‘I Like Big Butts’
ATLANTA, GA – As a full-time truck driver, Atlanta-based rapper Put Back Shawty has an arsenal of random phrases at his disposal. You never know what trucker term might pop out of his mouth when you hang out with him. So it should come as no surprise that the hot new single from he and fellow musician Daniel Phoenix is all about using truck metaphors to describe a woman with a big ass.
“I remember us being in the mall on old Highway 138, and he saw a girl with a big butt and he said, ‘Look at that truck!’” Daniel Phoenix said. “I said, ‘What?’ And he told me he calls women like that a ‘Semi’ because she got a big truck in the back. That’s where the idea for the song came from. It’s a fun song, and a clean song. Everybody can listen to it. It’s upbeat and definitely something for the dance floor. Something people can grind to.”
“I Call Her Semi” is just the most recent of a long list of singles released by the duo. They’ve been making music together since their junior years of high school at South Atlanta High. They were in the high school band together and would often freestyle rap in the courtyard during lunch time. They also both lived on the South side of Atlanta, and their shared experiences made them fast friends. As Daniel Phoenix started to delve into music production, recording and engineering, he eventually began to record songs with Put Back Shawty. The rest is history.
“We’re trying to bridge the gap between the younger generation and the older generation, while trying to give this area another sound," Put Back Shawty said. “It’s always been (Daniel’s) dream to make music professional. I drive trucks and have always encouraged him to do this thing, but we’ve always made music together. We eventually got to a point where I wanted to give it a good try because I believe we can really make a name for ourselves and try to become popular.”
Daniel Phoenix said he feels confident that they can pave a new lane within the music industry because the subject matter of their songs is not only fun but also relatable in ways that people will gravitate toward.
“We think it’s popular,” he said. “For instance, we have a song called ‘Feels Like Christmas’ that’s all about getting paid every day, or spending money every day. We have another one called ‘Hot Damn’ that’s all about anything good, like being well dressed, looking good, making money, and/or having clout or influence. And with ‘I Call Her Semi,’ it’s a metaphor for a woman with a butt so big it’s unnatural. We’ve all seen them, and you can relate to that. With this song, you have something to call it now. She’s got a truck back there … it’s a semi. That’s what we do – we take real, everyday concepts and we make them entertaining.”
