Post: Choosing a Career That’s Right for You

Your career is the summation of your professional journey. The person you were when you first chose your career may not be the same person that you are now. So it’s important to understand that whatever you choose to do career wise isn’t something you necessarily have to stick with.

  1. Start with some self examination. What is it that you enjoy doing? It’s important that you ask yourself some questions to figure out what it is that you want from your career. You may consider everything from interest based questions to trait based questions to determine who you are and which careers are going to suit your personality best. It’s common to feel energized and excited about what you do, but obviously you’re not going to feel that every single day, even if you love your job. Examining who you are will help you to understand whether or not you are in the right space in the first place.
  2. What are your motivations? Once you’ve considered a list of things about yourself in your examination, you should turn to your motivation for working in the first place. Maybe you want a career that pays you more, or you want something that will give you better job fulfillment. No matter what it is and in which field, you have to understand your priorities to understand what career will work best.
  3. Put together a list of your long term goals. If it’s career progression that you’re looking for, then you need to consider a career that gives you quite a high ceiling and much to segue into and aim for. It’s these things that will help you to determine whether or not you’re in the right space in the first place. If you want to rise past the managerial ranks and go the distance as a CEO, then you have to be willing to put the work in to get there.
  4. Speak to an expert. Sometimes it takes leaning into a recruitment consultant or another career expert to determine where you should be. They’ll be able to help you to sift through all of the noise and figure out which career is going to be right for you. Choosing the correct career isn’t a linear process, and it’s going to take some time, but once you find it, you can settle in and live your life the way that you’ve always wanted to.
