Funk Your Feelings: WOW Did The Hip Hop House Save Arizona Hip Hop… Again?
When you think about Arizona’s hip hop scene, you don’t typically think about a deep-rooted hip hop culture. In a land of trap artists and industry copy-cats, there is a group of artists that prove that Arizona has a deep sub-culture that is often ignored by most major music outlets.
The group I’m speaking about is The Hip Hop House, and they’re more like a collection of artists, diverse in every aspect of their crafts. Any night of the week, you can catch one of the 35 performers doing what they do best at local venues, bringing great music to an artistically starved fanbase. The culture is growing fast, and the Hip Hop House is providing a home for many artists from around the state, and country.
Hip Hop House Resident Host RoQy TyRaiD can be heard proclaiming “The Culture is Back!” as local hip hop heads gather en masse at Tempe’s local watering hole ‘Yucca Tap Room’. RoQy TyRaiD (Writer’s Guild, The Wake Up Show Unplugged, The Cleanup Crew, Coolin’ Out, Soul Spazm) is one member of the Hip Hop House resident collective, which also includes: Fact135 (Rhyme and Reason Radio DJ, The Wake Up Show guest DJ, Blunt Club, Coolin’ Out), Nick Norris (Nomad Hip Hop, The Cleanup Crew, Coolin’ Out), Prophetiko (State of the Artz, Nomad Hip Hop), J20 (WTFunk?! Friday’s) and Very G (Afro Classics,Blunt Club, Uptown, Coolin’ Out).
The Hip Hop House has touted some very notable guests over the past 3 years as ‘Arizona’s favorite independent hip hop night’. Guests like: Gift of Gab (Blackalicious), Coolzey, Adder, Bodega Brovas, Grand Agent, and Random (a.k.a. Mega Ran) have helped solidify their place in the Arizona hip hop community. Now the community is recognizing the Hip Hop House again at this years “AZ Hip Hop Festival” at Comerica Theatre – with the Hip Hop House Stage. The will be the 2nd time the Hip Hop House has had their own stage at the year’s largest hip hop festival in Arizona with special thanks to local promoter Justus (Cut Throat Logic).
Justus Started the AZ Hip Hop Festival last year, and brought in over 2,000 heads who rocked out for the better part of a 14 hour day. This year, things will be a little different. There are over 135 acts performing across 5 stages, and that doesn’t include the open mic stage that will be in the loading docks behind the building. To say that every pocket of Arizona hip hop will be represented would be an understatement. There will be every sub-genre from boom-bap to trap, from RnB to Juggalo. All bases are covered.
This year’s roster includes the following Arizona heavyweights:
- Fact135
