Rikki La Rouge – Cayo Coco

Grammy-nominated artist re-releases
culturally significant single ‘Cayo Coco’

MIAMI, FL – In 2013, Miami-based artist Rikki La Rouge dropped an album called “San Antonio” through Interscope Digital Distribution and Universal Music Group that went on to be a first round nomination ballot album for the 57th Grammy Awards 1st round nomination ballot. She was on the ballot alongside artists such as the Salsa Giants, a salsa supergroup featuring one of Rikki’s main influences Willy Chirino. Selena is the other primary influence of Rikki La Rouge. The album gained notoriety around the world for its anti-Castro sentimentalities and “Free Cuba” mantra that echos across all the songs on the album. The single “Cayo Coco” received the most praise. And now six years later, Rikki La Rouge is re-releasing the song during a time when she said the world needs to be reminded of the themes that were presented in that song.

“It’s a song about a beach in Cuba, but hidden in that song is a message of democracy and freedom,” Rikki said. “It’s basically me dreaming about how one day, after the regime is totally gone and the island is completely free, I would love to visit that beach only when the island and her people are truly free. I want to see a Free Cuba!”

The song is presented across a distinctly Salsa rhythm and melody, but Rikki’s style is truly original. She has invented her own sub-genre which she calls Nueva York Sabor – one part Mexican, one part Cuban and one part “American street music, which includes rock and metal and rap.”

“My sound reflects who I am,” she said. “I want my music to be known for bringing people together and uniting. I make music that is about freeing Cuba, freeing Bolivia but throughout that, there are themes that can resonate with anyone.”

MTV has acknowledged Rikki La Rouge as a Latin artist to pay attention to, and has been featured on the MTV website on multiple occasions. Rikki is also a iHeartRadio artist. She and her entire discography are with Interscope Digital Distribution /Universal Music Group (UMG).
