Mental Health Awareness: Be Kinder To Your Mind – Here’s How

It can be tough to be kind to your mind. There are all kinds of toxic messages in the media and even on social media that can make us feel bad about ourselves. Plus, the way we were raised can play a huge part in it. If you had a critical parent, you may hear their voice in your head criticising you, even though they are nowhere to be seen. Then, there are toxic friends, co-workers, and other family members that can make being happy and positive a very difficult task.

The difficulties people face are unique, but being kind to your mind is always important. This can mean breaking old habits, being consistent and vigilant, and getting into new ones that you can stick to. Of course, it takes work. But it’s so worth it! Here’s how to be kinder to your mind if you’re struggling:

Stop Putting So Much Pressure On Yourself

It’s time to stop putting so much pressure on yourself. Take some of those items off your to do list. Set boundaries with other people so you have more ‘you time’, and stop biting off more than you can chew. Stop beating yourself up if you haven’t been able to do something you wanted to do. You’re only human, and you can’t be perfect, or a superhero. You’ll have good days, but that doesn’t mean you can do the exact same every single day. Be kind to yourself no matter what – treat yourself like your own best friend.

Get Some Exercise

Exercise is one of the best things you can do for mood, focus, and energy levels. Of course, it also has many other benefits for your mental and physical health. You just can’t underestimate the benefits of regular exercise every week. Just make sure you enjoy it, or you won’t want to do it! Pay attention to how you feel afterwards and enjoy the natural high.

Eat Nourishing Foods

Nourishing foods help to give our bodies essential vitamins and minerals. Aim for as much fruit and veg as you can every day, and ensure you’re getting enough protein, fats, and carbs. All macronutrients are essential for a healthy mind and body. Aim to cook with fresh ingredients, but certainly don’t beat yourself up if you eat a pizza or some ice cream. Balance is key, and comfort food can be a great way to indulge yourself.

Talk It Out

Talk therapy can be tough, but it’s a great way to get things off your chest. You’d be surprised at how much one or two sessions with a great therapist can help you to change your outlook and untangle some of the issues you’re having.

Prioritize Your Sleep

Sleep is one of the most important things for lower stress levels and better health in general. Without proper sleep, we easily become irritable, lose focus, and experience other downsides.

Acknowledge The Positive

Find ways to reframe negative thoughts and acknowledge the positives in your life. Try to find things to be grateful for each day. If you do feel sad, don’t beat yourself up for that. Sometimes, we do need to feel these emotions so we can move through them
